Little shops of (Customer Service) Horrors?
by Gabriele Muellenberg
(Spain/Tenerife)
They sold me vegetables and fruit that was partly rotten after 2 days already at a little shop. It had happened again and again over a period of one month.
When I objected one day I was told in a rather snappy way that I should go for more expensive better quality. The dirty smile on the shop owner's face did it.
I really felt insulted.
The shop owner should have shown interest. I could have accepted any excuse, but no such reaction.
I would have said that those things may happen for such and such reason and I would have given the customer the same article again for free. Mind you, those things don't cost the world.
The shop owner should also have said that I may please make sure myself and try look at the merchandise more carefully.
And I would have told the customer to please bring back the merchandise as soon as possible in order to show it to the supplier.
It's no good really, by the way, when you buy on a Saturday morning and can only bring things back on a Monday.
I can accept that the situation at big supermarkets is different.
On the other hand those big stores sell fresher merchandise in general because of a bigger turnover.
If you told your granny this story she wouldn't believe. I am sure those little shops in grandpa's days knew how to treat customers.
The charm of Spain as well as of Tenerife are all those little shops, though.
