How to set up an Ergonomic Workstation
Setting up an ergonomic workstation is in the best interest of both employees and employers alike, because health and safety is such a big factor when it comes to sitting at a desk all day to perform your job duties,
This will help to minimize eye, muscle, and back problems which in turn keep employees from missing more work than necessary.
Ergonomic Workstation Checklist
The following checklist can be used to help ensure your workstation is set up ergonomically:
- Make sure that everything you will need to use during the workday is within 16 inches of reach including your keyboard, telephone, and mouse pad.
- Minimize clutter as much as possible, making sure garbage is thrown away and paperwork is filed and stored. This helps to ensure less scrambling when it comes to finding the work tools you need.
- Ensure that your computer screen and keyboard along with other office tools that are used constantly throughout the day are positioned directly in front of you, as to avoid turning yourself in awkward positions to use or see these tools.
- It is a must when it comes to wearing a headset when working as a customer service agent. Since you spend so much time working on the phone and a computer at the same time, it’s important to make sure you have free hands and do not have to use your head to hold a telephone to your ear.
- Your chair should always be placed in an upright position as to avoid slouching or otherwise sitting incorrectly which is known to cause serious back pain. Always make sure you can sit properly in the chair while both feet firmly tough the ground. If this is not possible, use a foot stool to ensure you are able to sit properly.
- When using a keyboard, leave no pressure on wrists while typing. Make sure to position your hands so they can easily push the buttons on the keyboard without straining wrists and elbows.
Using these tips will help to minimize pain associated with working at a desk daily while giving you the tools to good posture and work habits that you can take with you in the other areas of your life to keep you healthy and pain free!
