Dress Code and Uniforms

I have read what yout think about dress codes for a call center. What are your thoughts on uniforms? Meaning black pants, white button down shirt and black shoes. My difficulty is we have more of a business professional attire and even though people are within the dress code they don't look that professional. I thought the uniforms would solve all the write ups I have to do for dress code.

Before I come to the uniforms, I have a little comment on your current dress code...

You say: "even though people are within the dress code they don't look that professional."

A code that doesn't serve its purpose should be ammended or abandoned. Right now, it's annoying both sides of the code. Even if your people is dressed 'within the code' they don't look professional. And it annoys you. And if you talk to them about it, they're annoyed because they did make an effort to stay within dress code.

I wonder if prescribing a uniform, whether it's like you described, or another that fits your customers, is necessary. There's something like human individuality, and I do like to see some of it shine through. People are not robots, after all.

So speak to your people. Tell them that you feel the current dress code isn't working. Discuss with them how a 'professional look', one that fits your business and customers, can be achieved. If you can reach a common ground, write that down in your dress code. If not, go for the uniform. The status quo isn't working anyway.

If you do choose a uniform, give your people some say in it. If they're working in it day in day out, it should be comfortable within the environment they work in. Right?

Happy employees do more and better work!

Hope this helps.

At your service,

Erwin.
